Environmentally friendly baby products made from renewable raw materials

The "Green" series from nip®

As a family business, it is important to us to hand nature and its raw materials responsibly and sustainably. We have developed our Green series with the conviction that sustainable products can be both practical and beautiful.

All the products from the Green series consist of plasics with at least 90% renewable raw materials*. It goes without saying that our Green series meets the strict quality standards that we set for ourselves and our products. Our Green products are produced at our company head office in Georgensgmünd, Franconia and are therefore 100% Made in Germany.

The products that are currently part of our Green series are in modern, natural colours: the breastfeeding-friendly "Cherry Green" soother as well as our "Eat Green" range for babies learning to eat, consisting of a drinking cup, cereal bowl, baby food dishes, the SnackBox 2in1 and feeding spoons.

Our biomaterials

Biomaterial from sugar cane

The basic material here consists of 100% sugar cane (you can find out more about the origin of sugar cane below: Origin of the raw materials). When sugar cane is processed, sugar cane juice is produced. A small amount of minerals and additives are added to the sugar cane juice to be able to manufacture baby products out of it. The result is a high-quality bio-polymer, in our case polyethylene (= PE). When choosing the biomaterial, we pay particular attention to ensuring that it meets our high quality standards (e.g. stability and heat resistance).

We only process the selected material into a nip product if it corresponds to these 100%.

The material is naturally colourless. Colour granulate is added to the material during production so you can hold our colourful products in your hands later on. In the end, our Green products based on sugar cane are made from over 94% renewable raw materials.

All the product development, concept design and manufacturing of our products is done in Germany. More precisely in Georgensgmünd in Franconia, where our company, founded in 1932, has been based since 1998.

Biomaterial made from carbohydrates and vegetable oils

Our Green products have different material requirements due to their use and manufacture.

For this reason we use a second biomaterial. Similar to the processing of sugar cane, various vegetable and renewable raw materials are processed to achieve high-quality material properties. These include bio-based carbohydrates such as sugar, starch or cellulose as well as vegetable oils. We cannot tell you about every single raw material but we can guarantee that no palm oil is used in the vegetable oils.

The processing and manufacturing process is very similar to that of sugar cane. After adding a small amount of additives and minerals, a biomaterial is created, which is then processed by us. We also add colour granules as well as additives here to produce a high quality organic baby product. The finished Green product now has a share of over 90% renewable raw materials.

Sustainable packaging

When developing our Green series, we did not just pay attention to the products themselves but also placed special importance on designing a sustainable packaging solution. We have avoided unnecessary packaging material, wherever possible. For example, all the instructions for use are printed on the packaging. The packaging itself is made of more than 90% recycled paper. If packaging film is used at all, it has a recycling rate of 80%.

Origin of the raw materials

The majority of the raw materials we use for our Green series are made of sugar cane from Brazil. We make sure that the sugar cane only comes from regulated growing areas. By remaining in close contact and talking to our suppliers, we can rule out that the raw materials we use come from protected areas such as the Amazon or the Pantanal.

About 8 million hectares of land are currently used for the cultivation of sugar cane in Brazil. This represents about 1% of Brazil's total area (851 million hectares). About 50% of this is used for the production of sugar and 50% for the production of bioethanol. Only a very small part of bioethanol production is in turn used for the production of plastics. Bioethanol has been produced from sugar cane by fermentation for many years in Brazil. This bioethanol can now also be used to produce ethylene and therefore biopolyethylene. Overall, about 42% of Brazil's land (358 million hectares) is used for agriculture. These figures show that sugar cane cultivation currently accounts for just a small proportion of the total agriculture.

Did you know that sugar cane grows back within a year and yields 4 times more than sugar beet? Sugar cane therefore represents a very good basis for renewable raw materials.
